I’m reasonably excited. I like the steam deck, and I’m off the opinion that we don’t need an updated version just yet. A slower moving target for developers is best for long term game compatibility.

But eventually a new steam deck will arrive, and it will likely use the latest CPU/GPU, which will likely benefit from this new frame generation technology.

And perhaps some benefits will trickle down to the current steam deck, or maybe not 🤷‍♂️

But still, I’m optimistic for the future of mobile gaming.

I used to like the a400, had a few of them in service, but a few years ago I tried another one and it was terrible. Just… Slow… like an HDD. I did some research and apparently they changed something with the nand somewhere along the line. Did a bait and switch. I don’t remember the details but it annoyed me.

I actually needed to buy a budget SSD just today, and I got a BX500. We’ll see how it goes. I know not to expect much from a drive without DRAM, but at least I know that going in.

I see now that watts and therefore kW are rates. So it’s silly to add another rate to the end by appending “per hour”. But what is the time component of the watt calculation? To me it’s essentially instantaneous, even if that’s wrong. Even if that breaks the math, it’s still essentially true on a macro scale. And if it’s instantaneous, or even just close like microseconds, then it doesn’t hurt to apend another rate to the end, does it?

So why not use it? Batteries come with capacities rated in Wh and kWh, and it weirdly still makes sense to me because of my usage rate per hour example in my last comment.

And if we shouldn’t use it, then what should we use?

Is this problem we’re discussing, one that only occurs if you try to get really accurate with the numbers and times? Because for my uses it’s always seemed to work well enough.

A single kW is a unit of power, literally 1000 watts.

A kWh is a unit of energy, as in stored or delivered. Draw 500 watts for 2 hours? That’s a kWh. Or have a battery that can hold 1 kWh, then assuming 100% efficiency you could draw 1000 watts from it for an hour before it was empty.

All of this is kW times hour, I would say? But in my mind I would interchangeably say per hour as well, they feel the same.

Obviously I’m wrong, but I’d like to know why lol

I contacted one of those resellers, and they unsurprisingly weren’t interested in anything. I probably won’t try to put aftermarket firmware on them, I looked into it a bit and it seems it never really took off. Plus I live in an apartment. I’ll try to offload them on eBay or something.

It’s a bummer that Meraki stuff is less desirable, I just pulled it all out of the closet and it looks like that’s most of what I’ve got.

I’ve got two of the MR84, three of the MR36, a MS225-24P, some antennas for them, and three of some kind of IP phone CP-8841.

Is the Meraki stuff contract only? My buddies boss gave him this stuff from the closet at work. Says he didn’t want or need it. Nice! Did that for a long time, got pretty deep into it. Over a dozen DE razors, some straights, I had brushes and soaps and all that.

Eventually I settled into a routine with a feather asd2, Astra blades, and clubman’s shaving cream in a tub.

I have super coarse whiskers, they mostly grow straight down but I get some swirling, especially on one side of my neck.

I was able to do my whole shave in one pass, mixing WTG, XTG, and AGT depending on where I was on my face.

So I started wetshaving for the nice experience, but ended up with fast efficient shaves. Still though, I’d occasionally not have enough time, and I’d use the electric. Even though it was nowhere near as close, it was even faster.

Recently I’ve started to grow a beard, so I haven’t shaved in a couple months. This is the first time in my life I’ve tried growing a beard, so we’ll see.

I’m sure my wetshaving skills will come in handy for trimming and cutting a line on my beard.

Yeah the extremeRate kit! I bought it but haven’t installed it yet. I don’t actually have a problem with the buttons as is, but it fell like an interesting change to make

Not that it does you much good now, but you might’ve had a bad fan. My unit is a preorder one, and the fan wasn’t broken, but it was just… Noticable, when it was on. It wasn’t enough for me to say it was broken or anything, but I could just tell when it was running, especially at full speed.

It didn’t bother me, because I was like wow this game is really pushing the Deck hard, I can really hear the fan. Etc etc.

Well after a few months of hard use the fan developed a click, it was a bad bearing or something. You could make it go away by tapping it.

Anywho to make a long story short, after getting a replacement that was DOA, and then getting a second replacement. The new fan was noticeably quiet. So quiet that I thought I had another DOA. But no, it was working perfectly. I just didn’t realize how bad the original fan was.

So now I have a very quiet Deck, and I’m quite happy about it 😁

I have friends that do the same thing. It’s terrible. We were watching a movie I had already seen last night, and someone wanted the subs on. I couldn’t focus on the movie and I ended up playing on my phone. The subs kill me.

I don’t have any background knowledge to confirm this, but this seems like the extremely likely answer. Unfortunately.

It’s funny because I was at a point where I wasn’t playing games at all really, not on my big PC, phone, or anywhere.

I had pre-ordered the steam deck for my wife, and she used it a bit but when TotK came out that took all her attention playing on switch.

I had poked around on the deck, played a few games, but didn’t love using a controller instead of mouse and keyboard.

Then we had a gig where we had to sit in a car for 8 hours, and she convinced me to try playing horizon ZD. I had never played it, but I ended up really liking it. And the convenience of having it on the deck was great! I ended up playing it all the time, and beating it, and now I’m emulating BotW, playing it for the first time, and enjoying it.

Now I’ve gone full crazy, I’m emulating a couple dozen games, got a bunch of others installed and waiting. I upgraded my SSD to 2tb, replaced my fan, and am eyeballing that clear back with RGB.

My advice, if you can afford it, get it and just see what you think. You might like it!

Or, if you don’t like it, you can resell it. The value of these things seems to stay reasonably high. Though I imagine we might see a drop in price with the flood of LCD models about to hit the market.
