I had a similar situation (except baseboard heat instead) and ended up with a mixed system. It’s really dependent on layout. I’d be careful with anyone who doesn’t take a good look around before giving you a recommendation, unless you have zero room for ducting for instance.

I’m sure it varies a bit by region, but that wouldn’t be a crazy price for the NE. HVAC is just expensive these days.

I’d recommend getting at least three quotes. If different companies propose different setups (e.g., all heads vs ducted vs mixed), try to get at least two quotes for each. I ended up getting six quotes due to how much they varied in both price and design. My highest and lowest quotes were more than 20k apart for a <1500 sqft space.

If you have access to a 0% financing program, don’t wait too long. Those run out quick because it’s such an amazing deal.

Frankly for short haul flights it makes sense. Would it be worth paying double or triple for a three hour flight just to get a full meal? Anyone who truly wants a taste of old time flying can get that with a first class ticket, both in terms of cost and quality.

It was the inverse in my family. The uncle who extricated himself from most of the family was actually a huge piece of garbage and did everyone a favor by cutting us off. I don’t think he expected that nobody would make an effort to re-establish contact.

There’s virtually nothing that is not, at some scale, at a cost to others while benefitting oneself. Someone is always hungrier, sicker, whatever. However, the magnitude is what matters. Not every cost is equal. The creator of some free software putting in ads is a shame, but not a tragedy. Life will go on. We are not entitled to the fruit of their labor for free if they don’t want to provide it any more.

It’s all a symptom. We can’t revolve our expectations around people giving us all free labor out of the kindness of their hearts with how our society is structured. It’s great so many do, and extremely admirable, but I’d never fault any of them for going another way.

I don’t think this hypothetical is about winning so much as never having to worry about your needs being met again. The calculus changes completely for a lot of people (not optimistic enough to say most) if that’s not part of the equation.

That would be terribly boring. It would take the art, nuance, and fun out of language. It would also curtail the development and evolution of language. Can you imagine language without innuendo or double entendre?

That is exactly my point. It’s not worth asking because it doesn’t tell anyone anything they don’t already know. The ones employers ask are the same, though they want you to blow smoke up their ass about how it’s been your dream to write backend code for an insurance company since you were a kid.

I don’t like wasting time in interviews on questions or exercises that don’t help at least one party decide if the other will be a good fit. Unless you a hiring for a position where someone regularly needs to lie about why they’re engaging another party, these questions are rarely if ever valuable.

These are my least favorite questions, along with “what made you want to apply for this position?” I tried asking it back to a recruiter once (“why did you decide to contact me for an interview?”), and they didn’t really know what to say.
